Kenshi Yonezu’s Monster Encyclopedia (Text Translation)

Kenshi Yonezu released his first book, Monster Encyclopedia, on December 10th, 2016. It’s a collection and expansion of a monthly series he did for the magazine ROCKIN'ON JAPAN, where he drew monsters and gave a short description of their ecology. Here are translations of all the descriptions from the book.

Lately, readers have emailed me saying “I want to support my favorite authors, but it bothers me that there’s no way to support them other than buying their books.” My personal thought on this is that if I’m within earshot of someone saying “that was a good book,” nothing can make me happier. But I mean, if you want to give me 500 million yen or something, I’ll take it…

The Hanged Man: A Thank You From Uri

The voice acting auditions for The Hanged Man have now closed. Uri was so blown away by the support, she decided to write a message, and asked me to post it here since she figures a lot of people found out about the auditions through me.

The Hanged Man Voice Actor Auditions have concluded with a total of 376 submissions.

As a creator, I’m overjoyed to have received as many as this. The fact that all these people offered their assistance to a hobby-made game has given me so much encouragement. There were even some who left comments about what big fans of my games they were, which, with no exaggeration, brought me to tears. Truly, thank you to everyone who made a submission.

Choosing sixteen actors out of the many submissions was a very enjoyable, yet painful task. I listened to all the files I received, judging them by how well they fit the character, the acting skill, the sound quality… And honestly, there were so many amazing auditions, I really did struggle. With every character, I would select one person only to change to another, over and over. And not even just with the main characters, but the extras too.

The selection process was even a good opportunity for me to re-examine my own picture of the characters. So even in the sense of being given such opportunities as that, I’m full of gratitude toward the participants. Also, while there were only a few female parts for this game, many women did audition. I’m happy for this, and I also apologize.

For these auditions, I used my best judgement to pick sixteen actors. But I believe even those who didn’t make it in are all wonderfully talented, and will surely find somewhere to demonstrate their strengths. So while of course I look forward to the work of those chosen as voice actors for THM, I also wish for the future successes of everyone else.

Let me say once more: thank you so much for all your participation in the auditions!

[Also, here’s a chart of the number of submissions for each role.]

Memory (from Kenshi Yonezu’s LINE Blog)

Occasionally I find that in my pocket is a lighter or a CD or an iPhone charger that isn’t mine, and no doubt it’s because someone gave it to me in drunkenness the night before, but since I don’t have any memory of it, it’s worrisome.
